March

Sunday 15th March – 10:00am

Mothering Sunday – Church Parade and all-age service with posies for the women, and an opportunity to light a candle for others who can’t be with us. Free cake and coffee after the service in the hall.

Sunday 22nd March

Passiontide begins – this is the two weeks before Easter, and Christians are encouraged to devote extra time to prayer and fasting in preparation.

Wednesday 25th March – 7:30pm

Communion for the Feast of the Annunciation (marking when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary) – held in the Lady Chapel. Half-hour said service.

Sunday 29th March – 10:00am & 6:30pm

Palm Sunday

10am – Parish Eucharist, including the Procession of the Palms (starting in the Hall) and the dramatic reading of the Passion with the help of the St James Players.

6:30pm – A very special evening service for the Eve of Holy Week, including readings, poems and music from our extended choir.

Wednesday 1st April – 12:00pm

Celtic Communion for Holy Week – held in the Lady Chapel.

Maundy Thursday 2nd April

11:00am – Chrism Mass at Southwark Cathedral, where oils are given for the parish and clergy renew their vows.

7:30pm – Parish Communion of the Last Supper, including the symbolic washing of feet, the stripping of the altars, and optional Watch until 10pm.

Good Friday 3rd April

10:00am – Churches Together Walk of Witness – meet in Jubilee Square and walk to the War Memorial.

12:00–1:45pm – Children’s Easter Crafts in the Hall (limited to first 45 children).

All-Age Prayer Stations in the Church (open to all).

2:00–3:00pm – The Last Hour By the Cross – a moving meditation with music, hymns, and veneration of the cross.

Saturday 4th April – 8:00pm

Easter Eve – Easter Vigil with Confirmations at Southwark Cathedral. Please note there is no Vigil at St James; all are welcome at the Cathedral.

Sunday 5th April – Easter Day

8:30am – Easter Fire Service starting outside with lighting of the Paschal Candle.

10:00am – Easter Parish Communion with Easter Egg Hunt, plus prosecco, chocolate, and coffee.

6:30pm – Easter Festival Evensong.

Monday 6th April

Easter Monday – Office and church closed for Bank Holiday. All normal activities cancelled.

Wednesday 8th April

Easter Break – No Book Club or Celtic Communion.

Sunday 12th April – 10:00am

Low Sunday – One service only.

Monday 13th April

“Breathe” – On Easter break.

Wednesday 15th April

Book Club Returns – New book: “The Great Divorce” by C. S. Lewis.

Sunday 19th April

2nd Sunday After Easter – Choir returns.

Wednesday 22nd April – 7:00–9:00pm

Pentecost – All-Age Parade Service – Celebrating the Birth of the Church. Expect balloons, cake, and a few surprises.
